Dr Matthew Berryman and his colleagues have been providing advice to Samuel Aubin, a local 14 year old high school student who’s developed a shark app. This app provides users with an estimated likelihood of sharks being at a beach so they can make an informed decision of the risk. There are other sharp apps take into account shark sighting data. What makes Samuel’s app unique is that it takes into account not just shark sightings (from Twitter) but also other factors like water temperature and rainfall. He has successfully translated his own research into a working prototype, and the University of Wollongong is delighted to be involved in supporting him with ongoing research and app development.
The app is in it’s final stages of being “fine-tuned” before being available for download. Watch this space!
