Following an extremely successful meeting of our Innovative Coatings Group in July, August saw the Steel Research Hub play host to a large group of researchers and industry stakeholders in the Market-Focused Product Innovation Program. The thirty-five strong gathering included representatives from BlueScope’s marketing team, including Sean Wong, Product Innovation and Technology Manager, and Tom Tyndall, Market and Product Development Manager. Cox Architecture was represented by Director Philip Graus and Associate Michael Bradburn, whilst Dale Clarke, General Manager at Stockland, Dr Dake Yu from Bisalloy Steels, and John Kralic from Lysaght also participated.
The meeting was also an opportunity to bring together in person research teams, including recent post-doctoral and PhD scholarship recruits, from RMIT, Swinburne and UOW.
Industry Program Leader, Mark Eckermann, got proceedings off to an energetic start and the morning session was filled with presentations from each of the three project areas: high-strength Q&T steels; increasing steel intensity in mid-rise residential buildings; and innovative coatings for clean steel.
In the afternoon, teams broke out for intensive discussions within their research areas before coming back together to report on progress before the day closed. There is a great breadth of research being undertaken in this Program, but common to all research areas was the benefit to be gained by developing a greater understanding the industry imperatives at play, and this was reflected in the lively discussion in the morning session. In particular the input from BlueScope’s marketing team was very well received with several researchers seeking to deepen the conversation in that space, which is a promising development for an industry focused research hub.
