The Steel Research Hub warmly congratulates our Chief Investigators Professor Ma Qian (RMIT) and Professor Geoffrey Evans (UoN) for their success in the recent round of ARC outcomes. Professor Evans was awarded Discovery Project funding of over $340K in collaboration with Professor Anh Nguyen at UQ. Their project explores ‘froth flotation’ in the mining industry and aims to develop innovative modelling and experimental approaches to examine the effect of particle surface characteristics and hydrodynamic conditions on coarse particle detachment and flotation. Striving for new ways to save energy by floating coarse composite particles, this research is at the forefront of flotation science and technology. Professor Qian will lead a team on a project developing essential fundamental knowledge on 3D printing of titanium alloys by selective laser melting. The research is funded by a $310K Discovery Project grant and aims to achieve better than forged mechanical properties for critical applications. This recent success comes off the back of the announcement in June of two successful Linkage Projects led by Associate Professor Qian. The first has $420K funding to explore the development of an innovative injection moulding process to fabricate intricate titanium components. The second received $360K in funding for a project that will employ a variety of approaches to develop superior titanium implants for joint replacements. Congratulations Geoff and Ma!
