Physics at the University of Wollongong has been rated as “well above world standard” in the Excellence is Research for Australia results released recently. As well as scoring the highest possible rating of 5 for the entire Field of Research (FOR) “02 – Physical Sciences”, the maximum score of 5 was also attained in the sub-fields of “0204 – Condensed Matter Physics” and in “0299 – Other Physical Sciences”, which embraces “029903 – Medical Physics”. These results are a testimony to the research powerhouses of the Institute for Superconducting and Electronic Materials (0204) and the Centre for Medical and Radiation Physics (0299).

Mathematics has also been recognised with the maximum ratings in two areas. The Institute for Mathematics and its Applications can take pride in a rating of 5 in “0102 – Applied Mathematics” and the National Institute for Applied Statistics Research Australia celebrates a rating of 5 in “0104 – Statistics”.
