ASI’s new CEO Mark Cain visited the Steel Research Hub on Wednesday 22nd January to see first-hand the industry-focused research currently underway in support of the steel industry in Australia.
Mr Cain’s steel industry experience spans technical roles, R&D, sales, marketing, strategy, and manufacturing. In addition to a long career at BHP and BlueScope, his other senior executive roles include Executive General Manager at Coates Hire and, most recently, Executive Director at Metal Roofing and Cladding Association of Australia.
The visit started with a meet and greet of the Steel Research Hub team followed by a Hub overview by Director, Paul Zulli, and insights from Mr Cain as to the focus and strategic priorities of ASI. Mr Cain continued on to meet four project teams including presentations covering; the introduction of CFS in Australian mid-rise residential apartments (B2.1), innovative cladding and ventilation solution for CFS (B2.2), CFS shear panels for Australian mid-rise apartments (B2.3), Q&T steel properties and welding (B1), Sustainable Steel Manufacturing program highlights (Prog D) and surface treatment of metallic alloy coated steels (C3.1).
Mr Cain concluded his visit with a tour of the Facility for Intelligent Fabrication (FIF), showcasing UOW’s expertise in welding, robotics and automation (https://fif.org.au/).
The visit provided a valuable opportunity to showcase the Hub’s research program to Mr Cain in his new role and continue the important relationship between the Steel Research Hub and ASI.
