Dr Tonfei Tan, Associate Research Fellow with the School of Mechanical, Materials & Mechatronics Engineering (MMM) was recently awarded a Chinese Government Scholarship for “Outstanding Self-Financed Students Studying Abroad”. Tongfei’s supervisor, Prof. Weihua Li, also received an outstanding supervision award.

These highly competitive awards from the Chinese Government are provided to support outstanding self-financed students studying outside of China.

Tongfei has been with MMM since July 2008 and successfully completed Masters by Coursework and Masters by Research degrees respectively. He successfully completed his Doctor of Philosophy degree working on shear thickening fluids and their applications. Tongfei is now a postdoctoral fellow working on research related to an ARC Discovery Project under the supervision of Professor Weihua Li.

In addition to an excellent record of publications and participation in international conferences and workshops, Tongfei was also the winner of the People’s Choice award in Three Minute Thesis Competition in UOW, 2014.

Director of the Advanced Manufacturing Technologies Research Strength, Professor Weihua Li, commented that the award was a tribute to Tongfei’s hard work in his PhD study which reflects on the quality of the students in MMM and is an excellent attribute to the talent that the group continues to attract. “This is a tremendous success for Tongfei and high recognition of his PhD work in the field of smart materials and structures”, Professor Weihua Li said.
