On Friday, 5 August, the Faculty hosted 175 female high school students in Years 8-10 for the Engineers Australia Experience It! Conference 2019. This conference is held at a different university each year and this year UOW hosted the event. ANU, UNSW, USyd, Macquarie, CSU, WSU, UTS and UOW all facilitated workshops to get the girls involved in fun, interactive and hands-on workshops and team-based activities, where they explored the peculiar and interesting applications of engineering throughout the day.
Yemi Penn, a mechanical engineer, gave a mesmerizing keynote presentation where she spoke about breaking through limiting self-beliefs, and her journey growing up in Nigeria, studying engineering in London and travelling around the world as a professional engineer and successful entrepreneur.
Many thanks to Associate Professor Montse Ros for her opening presentation at the conference and for her constant engagement and willingness to be involved in our Women in STEM initiatives. Also, many thanks to Dr. Ana Heitor for donating her time to participate in the afternoon careers panel.
