Dr Ben Whale (UOW)
Level surfaces of the Lorentzian distance, global Lorentzian geometry and singularities
Recent work by Adam and myself has shown how level surfaces of the Lorentzian distance can be an effective tool to study Lorentzian geometry. This talk will give an overview of our current results and two directions of research: generalizations of the splitting theorem for globally hyperbolic manifolds and curvature divergence results for the Penrose-Hawking singularity theorems. The aim of the talk is to convince you that study of the Lorentzian distance, despite its deficiencies, is likely to lead to significant advances in Lorentzian geometry.
