Industry Leadership, Consultancy and Trends

The IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) UOW Student Branch presents Stand Out from the Crowd. This seminar will include talks from industry leaders on leadership, consultancy and trends in the engineering industry. After the talks there will be a career panel, where students will have the opportunity to ask the industry representatives questions relating to their work and the industry as a whole.

Ray Brown

Ray started his career in the power industry more than 30 years ago and has extensive experience with distribution systems. He has worked across a range of organisations in the utility, consultant, government agency and private sectors. He played an important role in managing the delivery of the International Broadcast Centre for the Sydney 2000 Olympics and was heavily involved in the commissioning of the 132kV and 11kV power systems for the Sydney Desalination Plant. He is the current Vice-Chair of the IEEE NSW section and Treasuer of the IEEE Australia Council.

John Ypsilantis

John Ypsilantis received his BSc degree (1984) in Pure Mathematics and Computer Science, his BE (Electrical) (1986) degree with First Class Honours and his PhD degree (1993) all from the University of Sydney. He is Managing Director and Principal Consultant at Heuristics Australia Pty Ltd, an electrical engineering and ICT consultancy based in Sydney, Australia which provides design and consultancy services to large public and private utilities in Australia and overseas.

Dr Ypsilantis has served as Secretary/Treasurer for the NSW chapter of the IEEE Power Engineering Society (2012) and currently serves as Secretary for the NSW Section of the IEEE in Australia.

Dr Ypsilantis specialisations include automatic control, communications systems and SCADA for gas, water and electricity utilities, data communications and network security for utilities and the application of machine learning and intelligent systems to utility operations.

Olly D’Souza

Olly received his bachelor of Engineering with distinction in Electronics and Communications, Master in Management – MGSM. He has extensive training and midterm work stints in different industries like Atomic Energy, Automatic Vending, Ultrasonic device manufacturing, micro computer system assembly and testing. Has worked with multinationals – Philips, SONY, VICON, CHUBB, etc – from engineer to senior executive positions.

Olly Currently runs his own business TechnologyCare. Has worked in India, Middle East, USA, UK, Japan. He has travelled the world for work and holiday. He has been a member of the IEEE since 1976 – continuously.

He enjoys practical work – from building works to IoT and programming. Is a member of standards Australia committee EL31 & EL51 &IEC79 WG12. Olly is active in social work groups, family and associations with a cause.

Tea and Gourmet Sandwiches will be available to eat after the event.
