Clinical Prosthetics – An insider’s perspective through an engineer’s lens
Jude Doherty; Prosthetist/Orthotist
Jude Doherty is a New Zealander that is currently working as a Clinical Prosthetist and Orthotist at Southern Prosthetics & Orthotics (SPAO) in Wollongong. Prosthetics and Orthotics is one of the important fields in Biomedical Engineering.
He began his scientific studies with a Bachelor of Science in (neuro) Anatomy & Structural Biology at Otago University, later completing a Masters in Prosthetics and Orthotics at La Trobe University & recently followed by a postgraduate diploma in Health Management, Otago University. Jude has been in Australia 5 months after working for the New Zealand Artificial Limb Service (NZALS) for 4 years where he championed the use of a CADCAM interface to create prosthetics.
During his time at NZALS, He worked with 3 successive Masters internships from Victoria University’s design school to implement 3D printing projects within prosthetics.
He loves his job!
It has a varied mix of design, materials, physics, mathematics, anatomy, physiology, human interaction – psychology, business and sales, hope and prayer. It is the fine tuning of this mix for optimal patient experience that offers engineering so much in the field of prosthetics.
