Dynamics and Patterns of Smolder Combustion Near Extinction
Smolder combustion involves a solid/gas reaction in a porous medium. This can, for example, describe burning foam insulation. Air forced through the porous medium in a direction opposite to that of flame propagation can cause extinction. Extinction in smolder combustion is sometimes preceded by spatial and temporal patterns increasing in complexity as extinction nears. Some experimental work has shown fingering patterns in smoldering waves near extinction. We look at the behavior of smoldering solutions near extinction to describe spatial patterns and temporal dynamics of such solutions.
