Clinical Aspects of accelerator-based BNCT

Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is next-generation radiation therapy for intractable cancers. Many clinical trials have been conducted using reactors because BNCT requires high-intensity neutrons. Recent progress in the technologies for accelerator-driven-neutron-source have rendered it possible to generate neutrons required the treatment, using a compact accelerator, which can be installed in a hospital. Many developments for the accelerator-based BNCT device are being progressed in the world. In particular, in Japan, a cyclotron-based BNCT device has been got a license for pharmaceutical approval this year, and the treatment with the insurance medical care system was just begun against patients for head-and-neck cancer in two hospitals since July.

In the lecture, an outline of the BNCT and development for the accelerator-based neutron sources for BNCT are explained. And Monte Carlo based dosimetry method and treatment planning system for BNCT are also introduced.
