##### Abstract

The Cuntz-Pimsner algebra of a C*-correspondence is commonly thought of as some kind of “crossed product by a correspondence.” Indeed, Cuntz-Pimsner algebras generalise many commonly studied C*-algebras, including crossed products by $\mathbb{Z}$ and graph algebras. Usually Cuntz-Pimsner algebras are defined via a universal property for certain representations of a correspondence. In this talk we propose a different universal property which characterises Cuntz-Pimsner algebras in terms of so called “absorptions” of a correspondence. This characterisation shows up naturally when performing $K$-omputations .
