Research focusing on the use of virtual reality technology to train coal miners has attracted Dr Nongliang Sun to visit SMART for a fact-finding visit.
Dr Sun comes from the Shandong University of Science and Technology in China, and is a specialist in electronic information – specifically, image processing, pattern recognition and machine learning.
Although he has studied virtual reality in the United States, he says that country focuses on the fields of the military and health, where he needs to come to Australia to learn about its uses for training miners.
‘Here in Wollongong, they have a real training system, it’s not just about research,’ he said.
He has visited Coal Services in Woonona and was impressed with the training system there, as well as the research of Dr Shiva Pedram and Professor Pascal Perez at SMART.
He hopes his visit – paid for by the Chinese Government – will foster increased co-operation between the two countries.
