APCOM 2017, also known as the 38th International Symposium on the Application of Computers and Operations Research in the Mineral Industry, took place from 9 August to 11 August, 2017 at Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado USA. The topics of this conference includes geostatistics, mine design, production planning, investment analysis, artificial intelligence simulation, mine automation, rock mechanics, mineral processing, and data management systems. All presentations were about the application of computers and operations research in the mineral industry.
During the conference, the applications of many software and computer languages were introduced by researchers including ANSYS/Fluent, MATLAB, COMET, SimSched DBS, MIP optimizer and so on. My presentation topic was Numerical Modelling of Gas Explosions in a development heading of underground coal mine. It adopts the ANSYS/Fluent to simulate the gas explosion and propagation in underground coal mining. During the interval of sessions, I was able to socialise with other researchers and students, which provided me with an opportunity to meet more people and learn about their research.

After the conference, we also visited the labs in the Colorado School of Mines, the Earth Mechanics Institute (EMI) Drilling Laboratory, EMI Rock Boring Laboratory and EMI Water Jet Laboratory. It was a good way to learn the mining development in USA.
